Dear Members and Friends of the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V.,

We cordially invite you to the lecture:

"Aesthetics and Excess: Contemporary Feminist Art"

Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m., Room B, IAAK , Regina-Pacis-Weg 5, 53113 Bonn

with

Dr. Karin Esders | Universität Bremen

About the lecture: Excess – often associated with femininity, artificiality, or hypersexuality and denigrated as the abject and the affective – is just too much. In rejecting these criticisms an aesthetics of excess challenges notions of taste, respectability, and authenticity as well as hierarchies of race, gender and beauty. In imaginative and sometimes most disturbing ways feminist artists have ruptured established systems of representation, thus creating troubling spaces and iconographies. Tracing the political potential of an aesthetics of excess the presentation engages with both early and recent practices of feminist art.

About the speaker: Dr. Karin Esders is a senior lecturer at Bremen University where she teaches Cultural History of the English-Speaking World. Her research interests focus on classical and independent film, intersectional theories, and representations of gender, race, class & sexuality in popular culture. Her publications interrogate American film, literature, and new media.
