George McGovern

Lecture & Discussion

Otto Wolff-Lecture · George McGovern »The Crisis of American Democracy«

George McGovern, Former Senator South Dakota & Democratic candidate for the Presidential Elections 1972

The Otto Wolff Foundation and the Amerika Haus e.V. NRW invite renowned personalities from the United States to Cologne in order to discuss current issues of German-American relations.

George McGovern is one of the most distinguished U.S. politicians of the 20th Century. He was a presidential candidate of the Democrats in 1972, member of the House of Representatives and longtime senator of South Dakota. McGovern was a special adviser to President John F. Kennedy and was honored with The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the U.S, by President Bill Clinton in 2000.

On this occasion the experienced and long standing politician, author and lecturer, talked about the current polarization in American politics. Obama has tried in vain to avoid splitting the parties by compromises.

The domestic political debate in debt dispute has shown that the American policy is in a deep crisis. Where is American democracy steering to? McGovern as an observer of U.S. politics in the international context looked into this question.

Moderation: Prof. Dr. Walter Grünzweig, Professor for American Studies at the University of Dortmund
