Reading & Discussion

»New York Stories by Dorothy Parker«

„Parker's short stories are among the finest and most intimate written in America in the 1920s and 30s.“ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung Newspaper)

Dorothy Parker, born in 1893 near New York, died in 1967 in a New York hotel. The American journalist and author Dorothy Parker, daughter of a Jewish German father, is little known in Germany. She was intellectual and passionate, loneyl and brave,  relentlessly exposing, perceptive, empathetic, sensitive and highly ironic and wrote in solidarity against societal discrimination. Dorothy Parker also wrote about love. These short stories dealing with self-inflicted misfortune and what couples do to each other when they want to stay together although they obviously do not fit together.

Actress Gesine Heinrich explores Parker's various first person narratives and takes her audience into the timeless world of the American author. Gesine Heinrich studied philosophy and literature, sang and acted in Freiburg, Berlin and New York. Since 1999, she is sings and acts on a regular basis and also does radio pieces and is a speaker for the ARD network.

With the Reading in Hotel Chelsea we get a glimpse of the tradition of Dorothy Parker, who lived and wrote in the Algonquin Hotel in New York. The Hotel Chelsea in Cologne in its time was similar to the Hotel Chelsea in New York – it was a meeting point for famous writers – and opens its doors exclusively for our guests.

The event will be held in German and English. Entrance is free of charge.
