Book Presentation & Interview
"In Defense of Globalization"
“The finance markets may be compared to a stove. You can fry a schnitzel or burn the house down with it,” says Professor Jagdish Bhagwati. The economist who was born in India introduced in a presentation moderated by Otto Count Lambsdorff his international bestseller “In Defense of Globalization” at the Excelsior Hotel in Cologne. In his book, acknowledged worldwide, which appeared in German on September 22 bearing the title “Verteidigung der Globalisierung”, Bhagwati takes on the arguments of globalization critics and rebuts them one by one.
The
internationally renowned economics expert shows how globalization has
considerably improved the living conditions of millions of people. No
one seriously wanting to enter the discussion concerning the effects
and uses of globalization can pass up this book.
The basic thesis of
Bhagwati states that globalization has engaged many economies in
international trade. By doing so they are now in a better position than
before. The economic boom and the pressure of competition on the global
markets, according to Bhagwati, also eventually lead to a change in
social and political culture. This “human touch” is an important aspect
and inseparably tied to globalization.
The
approximately 250 guests in attendance were enthused by Bhagwati’s
lively lecture and entered the discussion with much professional
expertise concerning the challenges of globalization. Due to the recent
events, the focus of the evening was on the capital markets and the
banking sector.
The event took place in cooperation with Pantheon Publishers.
