Commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Amerika Haus e.V. NRW and Altes Pfandhaus, Cologne present the installation “9/11 – fifty-seven other possibilities” by Susanne Krell.
During the past decade, the artist has traveled the world in order to take paper frottages of Ground Zero and other places with strong political connotations. “9/11 – fifty-seven other possibilities” assembles and transforms these transparent finger prints of collective cultural memory into a polysemous installation. Aesthetically situated between the concrete, deceptively straightforward impression of a flying object with motor sounds, and an abstraction reminiscent of Color-Field painting, the installation tests the representability of 9/11 and raises a number of critical questions: How is Ground Zero related to other global locations; how interrelated are aggressor and aggressed? And how does our perception of 9/11 change with different locations and points of view?
Krell’s haunting installation combines fragile paper objects, light, and sound to create an aesthetic space for remembrance, reflection, and further thought.
