World premiere with introduction by the composer

Oberhausen: »Buddha goes to Bayreuth«

Robert Moran, American composer

In Cooperation with the ChorWerk Ruhr, a project of the KulturRuhr GmbH, the Amerika Haus e.V. NRW cordially invites chosen members to a very special concert evening during the Ruhrtriennale 2011.

We are delighted to welcome you to an informal discussion and reception with Robert Moran at the Kaisergarten Oberhausen where you will have the chance to discuss his latest composition „Buddha Goes to Bayreuth“ and further transatlantic musical considerations. After that you will visit the Gasometer Oberhausen and enjoy the already sold-out world premiere of Moran’s composition as well as two works by John Cage.

As one of the most distinguished American composers of the 20th century, John Cage has revolutionized the known concepts of images and works by his blitheful interpretation. Robert Moran, a student of Hans Apostel and long time companion of John Cage, has created a diverse body of work reaching from concept-orientated city compositions such as “39 minutes for 39 cars” or conventional scores.

With “Buddha Goes to Bayreuth” Moran explicitly refers to Richard Wagner’s idea to place the roots of Christianity to Buddhism. Moran uses this heritage in coordination with accords from Parsifal in a composition style inspired by John Cage. John Cage has bonded with the industry culture of NRW: this piece was specially created for the over-acoustic room sound of the Gasometer.

Program:
John Cage: „Song Books” & „Ryoanji for any 20 instruments” in a realization for soprano solo and 20 string players

Robert Moran: Buddha goes to Bayreuth
