Lecture & Panel Discussion

Bonn: Avi Primor »The need for a European-American cooperation in the Middle East«

The Amerika Haus e.V. NRW and the American German Business Club Bonn e.V. (AGBC) with kind support of the Deutsche Welle hosted an evening lecture with Avi Primor, dealing with the Middle East conflict from a transatlantic perspective and especially emphasizing the role Germany and the United States could play in the future.

The peace process in the Middle East is stagnating. As the USA have pulled themselves out of the negotiations due to inner-political challenges, Europe has become the moving force.

One year after US-President Barack Obama has declared the establishment of a Palestinian State a possible reality within a year before the UN-General Assembly, the Palestinians are forcing this formation at the same place. While they clearly have the worlds, Germany and the U.S. however see this initiative critically as it could become counter-productive and incite violence in the region.

Without the support of the U.S. peace in the Middle East will likely not be achieved. In his latest book Avi Primor represents the thesis that Obama can only solve the Middle East conflict by working together with committed partners. What role should Germany take over? What can Germany do for Obama? And what does this mean for transatlantic relations in general?

Avi Primor is an Israeli diplomat and journalist. From 1993 to 1999 he was Israeli ambassador to Germany. He was known to the German public during this period as one of the most important voices of the German-Israeli dialogue. Prior to his career as a diplomat Avi Primor studied Political Science and International Relations in Jerusalem, New York and at the Sorbonne in Paris.
