»USA: About The State of the Nation«


A Panel Talk with Dr. Klaus Scharioth, German Ambassador in Washington, D.C. and Dr. Claudia Kramer-Santel, Foreign Desk Editor of Westfälische Nachrichten.

Already in the 1960-ies, Ambassador Dr. Klaus Scharioth went to visit the USA for the first time. After he received his High School Diploma and completed his military service, he spent one year of studies at Caldwell College in Idaho. Afterwards, he studied law in Germany at the universities of Bonn and Freiburg as well as in Switzerland at the University of Geneva and International Relations, International Law and International Economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Harvard Law School and at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

1976 Dr. Scharioth entered the German State Department (Auswärtiges Amt). His first assignements abroad took him to Quito and to New York to the German Representation at the UN. Subsequently, Klaus Scharioth was the head of the Cabinet of the General Secretary of NATO in Brussels. Under Germany's Secretary of State Klaus Kinkel, he was the director of the department of Defense and Security Policy. In the years of Secretary of State Joschka Fischer, Scharioth chaired the sub-division of „International Security and North America“, and held the position of a political director and later that of state secretary (Staatssekretär). In March 2006 Dr. Scharioth was announced German Ambassador to the United States.

In the historic City Hall of Münster, Ambassador Scharioth talks about the current state of the U.S. – from the perspective of the Ambassador and also from his own personal experiences.
